Choosing the right Microsoft training path for your team
A practical framework for L&D leaders to match Microsoft certification tracks to actual team roles instead of generic course catalogs.
Start with the role, not the badge
Most teams pick a Microsoft certification because it is popular, not because it matches the work their people actually do. Before enrolling anyone, map each role to the tasks it owns day to day, then work backward to the Microsoft Learn path or certification that covers those tasks.
Mix tracks by function
Admins and platform owners benefit most from Azure Administrator or Dynamics 365 functional consultant paths, while developers should lean toward Power Platform or Azure Developer tracks. Blending everyone into one generic path wastes budget and engagement.
Plan for a follow-up project
Certification without an applied project fades within weeks. Pair every training path with a real internal use case the learner can ship in the following month, so the skill sticks and the business sees a return.
